This paper reports a preliminary study of the toxigenicity of the Fusarium spp. and Gibberella spp. isolated from annual Medicago pods associated with reduced feed intakes by sheep and 4 additional isolates collected from Trifolium subterraneum and Hordeum murinum subsp. leporinum in Western Australia. For each isolate, 1 ml, 1 ml of a 1:2 dilution, or 1 ml of a 1:10 dilution of the concentrated extract was injected intraperitoneally into each of 3 rats. The rats were observed regularly, and those convulsing or moribund were euthanized. Control rats were also maintained for comparison. All isolates of F. aveanaceum, F. chlamydosporum, F. equiseti, G. acuminate and G. zeae were toxigenic to rats, except for one isolate of G. zeae. Overall, 77% of rats injected with the highest dose died. Many of the rats that survived appeared depressed for several hours after injection. |
