Popis: This project was designed to investigate the process of trophoblastic invasion of cells from the villous cell column into maternal tissues, the functions and antigenicity of these ‘invasive’ trophoblasts, and the immuno-response of the maternal tissues to these cells of fetal origin. To paraphrase, the trophoblasts distal to the cell column migrate into the endometrial interstitia, proliferate and form lacunae. These migrating cells intrude into the lumen of blood vessels of the interstitia and replace the endothelial linings and act as the vanguard for the formation of the intervillous spaces. The maternal tissues, in order to suppress unlimited infiltration by fetal elements which might lead to uncontrolled destruction of the host, respond with an active immuno-defense. These various reactions are of importance to the understanding of nidation and maintenance of pregnancy. However, as it is difficult to obtain clinically adequate specimens at the time of implantation, this investigation was performed on specimens obtained at surgery performed during early pregnancy.
