Formation and characterization of the unsymmetrical dirhenium polyhydrides Re2H6(PMe3)5 and Re2H6(SbPh3)5 and observations concerning the mechanism of the conversion of Re2H8(PMe3)4 to [Re2H5(PMe3)6]+

Popis: The reaction of Re 2 H 8 (PMe 3 ) 4 with PMe 3 in methanol proceeds to give [Re 2 H 5 (PMe 3 ) 6 ] + via the intermediacy of Re 2 H 6 (PMe 3 ) 5 and [Re 2 H 7 (PMe 3 ) 5 ] + , both of which have been isolated and characterized on the basis of their 1 H and 31 P NMR spectra and their electrochemical properties. Measurements of the 1 H NMR spectrum of Re 2 H 6 (PMe 3 ) 5 in C 7 D 8 over the temperature range +50 to −100°C show that this complex possesses the unsymmetrical structure (Me 3 P) 3 HRe(μ-H) 3 ReH 2 (PMe 3 ) 2 , at least at low temperatures. A similar type of structure has been found in the solid state for Re 2 H 6 (SbPh 3 ) 5 , a complex that is formed by the reaction of (n-Bu 4 N) 2 Re 2 Cl 8 with an excess of SbPh 3 and NaBH 4 in ethanol; a single-crystal X-ray structure determination
