Popis: Summary No prospective studies in the literature demonstrate that specific systemic factors influence implant failure. Many large implant studies selected healthy patients to support their implant design. Lekhold et al26 and Matukas29 have suggested that endosseous implants can be placed in patients with a wide variety of medical conditions. More prospective studies are required to determine accurately the systemic factors that influence implant failure. Surgeons should follow the basic principles of surgery as they relate to performing elective surgery on medically compromised patients when considering patients for implant placement. Medical conditions that cause poor bone healing, decreased vascularity to the implant bed, and a decreased inflammatory response could be considered conditions that would cause a decreased rate of implant success. Conditions that fall into this category include poorly controlled diabetes, collagen disorders, blood dyscrasias, and possibly osteoporosis.
