IE TCD MS 35, The Bible, in Latin, of St Jerome's version with the Interpretation of Hebrew names. Written and illuminated in England (possibly East Anglia) in the early 14th century. Marginal notations in 15th-century Secretary and late 16th- or early 17th-century Italic hands also throughout, including manicule drawings (e.g. 121v). The historiated initials of Psalms 1, 26, 38, 52, 68, 80, 97 and 109 are numbered with roman numerals from i-viii in a late medieval hand according to the eight-fold or liturgical division for matins. Psalms 109, 114, 115, 121, 126, 131, 137 and 143 similarly numbered by same hand according to the liturgical division for vespers. Marginal note missing opening text, evidence of cropping (123v). Loss of text and decoration: The excision of two initials has resulted in the loss of some text on 28-29v (historiated initial removed from folio 29v, beginning of Leviticus, cutting through 2 folios) and 111-112v (historiated initial removed from 112v begin of I Paralipomenon). Though the quire number on 337 is xxix and that on 349 is xxxiii, no text is missing between 337 and 349.Margins of 204 cropped with no apparent loss of text.MS features 77 historiated initials (approx. 7 lines) in colours and gold, with partial borders, at the beginning of biblical books and the divisions of the book of Psalms. Foliate initials in colours and gold (approx. 5 lines), with partial borders, at the beginning of prologues and Interpretations of Hebrew names. The finials of the historiated and decorated initials extend into the margins, accompanied by patterned, notched and scalloped background panels, and incorporating three-pointed, ivy and heart-shaped leaves, stylised four-petalled flowers in lozenges, gold balls and clasps, and large-scale grotesque hybrids often growing directly out of the main stem of the foliage. Initials in blue with red pen-flourishing, at the beginning of chapters. Running titles in blue with red penwork decoration. Rubrics contain small blue opening initial with red penwork decoration and further lettering in red. Sandler attributes the decoration to one main anonymous artist and figure painter, who was also responsible for much of the work in the 'All Souls Psalter' produced in East Anglia in the early 14th century (Oxford, All Souls College MS 7). A second figure painter (beginning 337) is similar in style to the Walter de Milemete workshop, particularly hands in the 'DuBois Hours' (New York, Morgan Library MS M.700) and another contemporary Book of Hours (Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Douce 231). Manuscript additionally features individual motifs found in East Anglian manuscripts, such as lightning-like zig-zags, interlace knots, notched and scalloped background panels in the border (L.F. Sandler, 'Gothic Manuscripts, 1285-1385', A Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in the British Isles 5, (London, 1986), no. 83).
