Alcohol Content of Blood from Turkeys Fed Diets Containing Glucose or Starch as a Source of Carbohydrate

Popis: EXPERIMENTALLY induced pendulous crop has been reported to occur in Broad Breasted Bronze turkey poults when fed a synthetic diet with glucose monohydrate as the source of carbohydrate (Wheeler et al., 1957). When the diet was altered so that starch replaced glucose, no cases of pendulous crop occurred. An increase in the number of Saccharomyces were found in the crop contents of the glucose-fed birds when compared with that of crop contents from starch-fed birds. Subsequent studies relative to fungi in the crop and the mechanism of pendulous crop formation in turkeys were reported by Rigdon et al. (1958) and Manfre et al. (1958). The authors identified Candida albicans, Saccharomyces tellustris and Torulopsis glabrata as the predominant organisms in samples of crop contents from birds fed a synthetic diet containing glucose monohydrate as the carbohydrate source.
