Popis: Rats were exposed to tobacco smoke from high and low tar cigarettes, for 6 weeks, at two dose levels. Ultrastructural features of alveolar macrophages from the tobacco smoke exposed and control rats were measured with an image analysing computer. Compared with control rats there were statistically significant increases in: macrophage area; area to perimeter ratio, and the area of cytoplasm occupied by lysosomes, in rats from both high tar groups. There were no statistically significant changes in any parameter when rats from the low tar groups were compared with control rats.
