The evolving international space program requires in-space servicing and autonomous exploration vehicles. All of the needed capabilities require humans in the loop at some level, and thus fall under the broad definition of "telerobotics." The various applications of space telerobotics are described along with actual and planned National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) programs to fly and use these capabilities. The associated NASA supporting research program is described, which includes mission analysis, core research, systems integration testbed, applications demonstrations (ground), and flight experiments. The importance of and relation to the "controls" discipline and IFAC is discussed. |
