An adjoint method is developed in order to optimally locate collocated sensors and actuators on a body in a systematic fashion. The devices are positioned in order to maximize spatial and modal controllability while minimizing the level of observation spillover from unobserved modes. Objective functions are defined using a spatial H2 norm and gradients of the objective and governing equations are calculated for use in a gradient-descent iteration. The approach is demonstrated by a single actuator placement on a slender rod. |
