US Women’s National Team forward and 2019 Golden Boot winner Megan Rapinoe used the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as her personal stage for both soccer and political performances. This chapter examines how women fans of the USWNT understood, interpreted, and assigned meaning to star forward Megan Rapinoe’s iconic power pose in light of their fandom. Further, it explores how women fans interpreted the pose—and Rapinoe herself—as a condensation symbol. An analysis of fandom, identity, and politics, soccer fans—through extensive interviews—scored high on the scale of performative fandom of both Rapinoe the player and Rapinoe the activist. |
