Popis:	Wagner presents the issue of institutional emergence in East Asia and introduces the book’s respective research interest. Advancing a critical realist approach, the chapter illustrates the shortcomings of traditional International Relations (IR) approaches that draw on regionalism and institutionalism in order to study regional institutions and their emergence. Introducing the concept of emergence, Wagner demonstrates the advantages of such a critical realist approach to study institutional dynamics in East Asia and to conceptualize social emergence in international relations. The chapter closes with a short guide to the structure of the book.
