Popis: With the focus on biomedical applications the article gives a comprehensive overview of interaction processes between metallic materials and biological systems and describes major degradation mechanisms important in this respect. The following groups of materials are discussed: (1) noble metals, derived alloys and amalgams, (2) materials consisting of groups VI B to VIII B of the periodic system, (3) titanium and its alloys, (4) biodegradable metals, (5) coating systems and surface finishing, and (6) combinations of metallic biomaterials. Additionally, the text includes basic considerations about corrosion and wear processes as well as testing methods.
