Popis: This paper describes a dc-dc boost converter which shows near null load transient response. The boost converter is augmented with extra energy paths that sink or supply charge during load steps. The output voltage deviation and inductor current overshoot during load transients are substantially reduced or eliminated. A charge-balance based analysis is utilized in this paper to describe the control of the augmentation paths. This technique will allow an easy control of the augmentation branches and adds degrees of freedom for fast energy changes. This approach is discussed in context with other optimal regulation techniques such as minimum time control (a.k.a. time optimal control). Simulation results are shown in this paper for an augmented boost converter with a 5 V input and 12 V, 50 W output.
