Popis: | The interference of fathen (Chenopodium album L.) with lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) during establishment was studied by growing the 2 species in pots (in a growth cabinet) according to the replacement series model of de Wit (1960) for an 8-week period after sowing. Pots received either no nitrogen or 50 kg/ha basally. Fathen was more competitive than lucerne, as shown by their relative crowding coefficients, relative yields, plant height, leaf area, root length, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, and total dry weight. The product of the relative crowding coefficients of lucerne and fathen, and their relative yield total were both close to unity, showing that competitive interference occurred between the 2 species and that they were 'mutually exclusive'. The absence of any effect of nitrogen treatments indicated that this was not the factor limiting growth. |
