A July 1987 European Community (EC) survey (CEC., 1988) measured copper, lead and zinc pollution in Italian coastal waters (Figure 4.1). At Lido di Ostia (near Rome) and Pesaro high concentrations of copper, lead and zinc were detected in the water. Significant mercury (Hg) pollution has been detected in the same survey, near the island of Ischia (province of Naples). The measured concentration of 97 ng Hg/l is above the 70 ng/l limit defined by the EC for heavily polluted seawater. It should be noticed that only a limited number of Mediterranean beaches were investigated. |
