Popis: Face fly, Musca autumnalis De Geer, control experiments on quarter horses involved the use of (1) 2 kinds of smear-type insecticide formulations (mineral oil and corn syrup) applied with a paint brush to the facial area and (2) specially designed halters with frontal, protective, dichlorvos (20.0%) treated plastic strands. The mineral oil smear mixtures included dichlorvos 0.5% plus Tabatrex® (dibutyl succinate) 2.0%; Imidan® ( O, O -dimethyl S -phthalimidomethyl phosphorodithioate) 1.0%; diazinon 1.0%; azinphosmethyl 1.0%; trichlorfon 2.0%. The corn syrup smear mixtures included dichlorvos 0.5% in water plus 50.0% corn syrup; and dichlorvos (20.0%) resingranules plus undiluted corn syrup. The smear-type treatments were impractical and ineffective. The dichlorvos-plastic strand halters, when correctly installed, adjusted, and maintained, provided good to excellent control of face flies without any observable toxicity to the horses.
