Pulsed Doppler and color Doppler flow mappings would be valuable alternatives to contrast angiography in facilitating the noninvasive quantification of regurgitation. However, there are as yet no established methods of grading regurgitation by either pulsed or color Doppler flow mapping. The methods proposed so far grade regurgitation on the basis of geometrical features of the regurgitant jet, such as length, width, and area, or on the color variance of the jet, which is thought to be related to turbulence intensity. None of these methods grade regurgitation on the basis of the absolute issuing flow-rate or the regurgitant volume. |
