Popis: | The fatigue behaviour of plain carbon (F) and stainless (C) steel Galfenol alloys grown by free standing zone melting was investigated. As-received samples of both alloys were laden with macroporosity and initial results were highly scattered. Hot iso-static pressing was pursued to reduce porosity, to potentially improve fatigue life and reduce scatter. For the C alloy, volume fraction porosity was reduced by 85%, scatter was reduced by 8% and the mean fatigue life improved by an order of magnitude. For the F alloy, porosity was reduced by 96% but fatigue results were not improved. |
