Photoreceptor Mechanism of Neurospora crassa: Control Over the Electrophysiological Properties of Cell Membrane and Over the Level of Nucleotide Regulators

Popis: The fungus Neurospora crassa bears a physiological mechanism which provides for the control by light of the realization of its developmental program. When this organism is cultivated in the surface culture, light stimulates formation and maturation of conidia rich in carotenoid pigments [3, 14]. In some mutants conidiogenesis manifests itself with a circadian rhythm; the permanent illumination suppresses the rhytmicity [13]. In the submerged culture the conidia formation is hampered and carotenoids are accumulated in response to illumination directly in the vegetative hyphae. The action spectra of the physiological response — the photoinduction of carotenogenesis and the light suppression of circadian rhythm of conidiation — demonstrate the sensitivity of the photoreceptor to the short wave visible and to the near-ultraviolet radiation [3, 13, 14]. These action spectra, along with the results obtained in the experiments with riboflavin auxotrophic mutants [9], and with the data concerning photocatalytic redox reactions connected with the photoreception [5, 8] may indicate the possible role of the flavin chromophore in photoreception.
