Studies conducted with the rhizomes of speargrass (Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv.) in a growth-chamber environment using a peat—vermiculite medium showed that the stage of rhizome growth and its weight were the main features determining the regenerative capacity of the propagule. Re-growth ability increased with rhizome age and weight, whereas rhizome length, thickness and number of buds did not contribute significantly towards subsequent growth. On the basis of regenerative capacity, speargrass rhizomes were classified into young, intermediate, mature and old rhizomes. |
