Modularity in organisms can be described at many organizational levels and is closely linked to integration among elements of the organ or system. Modularity in organisms can be measured and compared among systems and among lineages. The emergence of modularity in the developing organism provides insight into the patterns of anatomical modularity observed in adult forms, and thus the origins and the consequences of modularity and integration are a major research area in evolutionary developmental biology. |
