Nonspecular Reflections from Underwater Objects

Popis: This paper presents some recent results of experiments conducted to investigate nonspecular acoustic echoes from the edges of underwater objects. When energy is incident at the critical angle, it has been found that ordinary refraction theory can be used to predict the large‐amplitude nonspecular echoes observed. However, echoes resulting from energy incident at other angles require a more complex explanation. Echoes from edges shadowed by the object also have been noticed. These echoes appear to be the result of several diffractions around the object. All these experiments were performed in a 15‐ft‐diam wooden tank employing broad‐band pulses and 40‐ to 150‐kcps pulsed sine waves.
