Popis: This study deals with the recent changes of the morphological and biogeographic dynamics of the Ariege River, a mountain river located in the French central Pyrenees, Ariege. After a description of the study area and a presentation of the scientific context and natural framework (chapter I), the first part of this thesis relates to a morphological (chapter II) and hydrological (chapter III) inventory of changes. By using diachronic analyses, the goal is especially to highlight the recent changes of the discharge, longitudinal profile, water surface slope, sinuosity and channel width. In a second part, the study focuses on the origin of changes. What is the contribution of the climate, vegetation cover in the basin area (soil protection against scouring), the role of dams (sediment discharge stopping, man induced transformation of hydrology) on the alteration of the geomorphic dynamics of the Ariege River (chapter IV) ? Focusing on natural and man induced transformations, it appears that man induced activities are the causes responsible for physical and biological degradation of the hydrosystem (chapter V). The third and last part of this study investigates the river restoration possibilities (chapter VI). It proposes the principles of a theoretical intervention, and several precise and applicable technical issues. Finally, the socio-cultural and economical context on the Ariege River is studied showing that the restoration project should he a vector of development.
