Popis: The results obtained by computer tomography (CT-scanning) in the diagnosis of exophthalmos have been so favourable that this new method of investigation should be regarded as the radiological aid of choice in the diagnosis of this condition. The literature reports a diagnostic efficacy of over 90%. Table 1 lists the values reported by a number of authors who compared the CT-scan with conventional radiological methods of investigation. The so-called efficacy concerns only the demonstration or exclusion of pathological tissue as a cause of exophthalmos. In the differential diagnosis of the pathological tissue, CT-scanning is often not more effective than conventional methods. The possibilities of differential diagnosis can be somewhat extended by contrast intensification. Moreover, optimally accurate determination of the localization and extent of the process can also be helpful in differential diagnosis. For this purpose, Hilal et al. (1977) make use of very thin sections (4 mm).
