Statistics gathered in the 1990s report the downward trend of college enrollments in German despite rising enrollments in high school that in raw numbers approached the high levels of the 1970s.1 Anecdotal evidence suggests that this alarming drop continues. Why don't students who have committed several years to German in high school continue to take German in college and become the life-long learners that the National Standards envision?2 Most important, what can we do about it? To address the critical juncture in student learning between high school and college the AATG applied in 1998 to StADaF for funding.3 Upon receiving the first of three grants in 1999, we assembled a committee of high school and college teachers of German. The survey project, "Maintaining the Momentum," arose from committee members' strong feeling that to devise effective strategies for motivating students to continue German, we first had to gain a better understanding of what influences students' choice of study.4 Our ultimate goal was to use these results to formulate practical recommendations for affectively and effectively bridging the gap between high school and college and thus to |
