Popis: | Study abroad programmes are considered a proficient way of developing intercultural competence and global awareness. Exposure to international ‘others’ is viewed as a way to reduce ethnocentric attitudes, and to increase global citizenship. The authors critically analyse a three-month teaching practice programme in Namibia offered to Norwegian student teachers. A qualitative study design was used. The findings revealed that many student teachers expressed more tolerance and openness towards otherness after the programme than before. However, ethnocentric attitudes towards certain aspects of Namibian society, traditions, and educational practices were found. The findings are discussed in light of postcolonial theory. |
