The present study deals with effects of gender stereotypes in an online dating context. Specifically, it is investigated how a gender stereotypical versus a neutral self-presentation on photos in online dating affect recipients. For the aims of the study, men and women were photographed each presenting themselves once in a gender-stereotypical female/male or neutral manner. Based on theories about gender, their roles in society and previous empirical findings, it is assumed that gender-stereotypical photos are received better by recipients. More precisely, the depicted persons are expected to be perceived as more attractive, and a higher romantic interest is shown in them. In terms of long- and short-term interest in the depicted persons, men and women are expected to differ after seeing gender-stereotypical versus neutral images. Furthermore, it is assumed that the effects are intensified if the recipients show a higher endorsement of traditional gender roles. |
