Popis: | The mechanical reliability of fused-silica optical fibers is significantly influenced by properties of their polymer coatings. In this investigation we have conducted dynamic fatigue testing on silica fibers coated with two series of ultraviolet cured polymers that possess vastly different water absorption and permeation properties. The difference among coatings in each series is their varying levels of adhesion to the glass substrate. This study correlates the tensile strength and dynamic fatigue behavior of a silica fiber with the adhesion, water absorption, and water permeation properties of its polymer coating. We observed a strong correlation between the adhesion property of a polymer coating and fiber strength. The fatigue parameter determined in dynamic fatigue testing was shown to be affected by the rate and amount of water vapor transport through the fiber coating, and it should only be used with caution in evaluating the long-term reliability of optical fiber. |
