It has been proved that specific serum definitely reduces the mortality in pneumonia due to type I pneumococcus. This fact has been amply demonstrated by several careful studies 1 on large series of subjects, which, if taken together, total many thousands of patients treated with serum and a comparable number of controls. However, it is disconcerting that in the very reports which are submitted to prove the value of the treatment it is stated that a not inconsiderable number of patients treated with serum succumb in spite of its use. In the series studied by Park and his associates 1a from the Bellevue, Harlem and New York hospitals, there was a mortality of 19 per cent in the cases in which serum treatment was used, and in the series reported by Cecil and Plummer 1b there was a mortality of 20.1 per cent.
