Popis: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the future prospects for industrial heat pumps in North America. BEST Energy Systems has been actively involved in the development of North American heat pump technology. The first heat pump heat recovery system was installed at a poultry processing plant in Kitchener, Ontario. The waste heat is recovered by glycol that is circulated through the shell and tube heat exchangers. The second system was installed in another poultry processing plant in Brampton, Ontario. The heat recovery is accomplished in two stages. The first stage is a preheater that includes a shell, a tube condenser, and a plate heat exchanger connected by a glycol runaround loop. This stage preheats incoming process water from 50°F to 80°F. The innovative feature of this system is the second stage heating with a heat pump using a cascading condenser. This is a heat exchanger that allows direct expansion of the heat pump refrigerant, at the same time condensing the ammonia refrigerant for the plants ice machine.
