Popis: | The £262 million New Tyne Crossing in north-east England was fully opened to traffic in November 2011. It consists of a new 1·5 km immersed-tube road tunnel under the River Tyne, which opened in February 2011, and the refurbished 1967 Tyne Tunnel. Together they provide two traffic lanes in each direction and a three-fold increase in capacity. The twin-tunnel crossing was delivered for Tyne and Wear Integrated Passenger Transport Authority under a 30-year public–private partnership concession contract, with funding secured entirely from toll revenue –a UK first. This paper provides an overview of the planning, procurement, design, construction, refurbishment and commissioning of this complex and challenging project. |
