Popis: |
Steroids alter the metabolism and functions of their target tissues due to the presence of specific binding proteins termed ‘receptors’. The binding of these receptors by steroids results in ‘activation’, a process whereby the steroid-receptor complex is endowed with the capacity to bind to specific nuclear sites, termed nuclear ‘acceptor’ sites. The results of this nuclear binding are steroid-induced alterations in the transcription of many genes, as well as changes in the abundances of many gene products (O’Malley & Means, 1974; Thrall et al., 1978). |
