Research of private libraries has become more and more relevant in recent years because the information stored in the library describes not only the literary tastes and interests of its owner but also provides an insight into the context of the era. The library of Rainis and Aspazija has been studied but to a relatively small extent. One book of the poets’ library – Robert Hamerling’s novel “Aspasia” – creates an in-depth interest in the authorship of the translations made by Rainis and Aspazija, namely, which of the poets was the translator of the particular text. The research allows us to conclude that Hamerling’s novel was translated by Aspazija; Rainis made only an abbreviation of the original text. The private library of poets has considerable research potential. |
