Popis: Large arrays of complete microcomputers promise cost effective means to treat extensive numerical problems. High reliability can be achieved very economically. The great number of present microcomputers has the potential for degradation without a significant loss of performance. At an example for an existing system the SMS 201 (Structured Multicomputer System) is considered. It contains 128 identical single board microcomputers. The SMS 201 system is now in operation for more than 2 years. The MTBF of the module array is about 3 weeks for applications which can not accept the failing of any microcomputer. But it increases to about 3 months, if a loss of performance up to 3% can be accepted. This feature improves maintanability and cuts service costs without additional redundancy.
