Popis: | Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the role of long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS). Interest in LATS is related to its possible role in the pathogenesis of thyrotoxicosis. LATS can be detected only in the circulating blood of patients with thyrotoxicosis or a past history of that disease. When purified from serum, LATS activity is associated with a protein fraction which has the characteristics of a member of the immunoglobulin G (γG) class of proteins. It has been suggested that LATS may be a member of the group of circulating thyroid autoantibodies that are known to occur in patients with certain thyroid diseases, including thyrotoxicosis. Thus, the concept of LATS as the ultimate cause of thyrotoxicosis also involves the acceptance of the idea of a thyroid-stimulating autoantibody. There is evidence from family studies that genetic influences are of importance in thyrotoxicosis and in the distribution of LATS activity. |
