The year 1922 marks a watershed, both in AB’s private life and in the history of the firm. Marguerite Godefroid successfully petitioned for divorce, though the ultimate financial settlement was to provoke much legal argument and lasting acrimony. It was Marguerite’s investment that had turned a small firm into a big one. But in 1922 and for many years to come AB had to carry the weight of a huge overdraft. It was only after his death, in 1951, that the matter was finally settled to the satisfaction of all concerned. |
