Lattice dynamics of Mg2Ge

Popis: The longitudinal and transverse sound velocities of Mg2Ge in the [100] and [111] directions have been measured from 80–300°K. The thermal expansion of Mg2Ge has been measured over the same temperature range. The elastic constants obtained from these measurements were combined with optical data to calculate the lattice vibration frequencies and specific heat. Two point charge models were considered. In Model I, the short range second nearest neighbor interactions were assumed to be central; in Model II, the short range forces between Mg atoms were assumed to be zero. Model II gave a lower Raman frequency and lower acoustic mode frequencies near the Brillouin zone boundaries. The experimental specific heats agree quite well with the values calculated from Model I at high temperatures, and with the values calculated from Model II at low temperatures. The calculated Debye temperature at 0°K of492 ± 8°K was in good agreement with the experimental value of 488°K.
