The rate of proton transfer in ammonia solutions containing water and hydroxide ion was determined as a function of concentration and temperature. The rate of proton transfer from a water molecule can be represented as: Rate = k2[NH4+][H2O] + k3[OH−][H2O]2. Values of Kion = [NH4+][OH−]/[H2O] were determined at various water concentrations. The data were described by a single activation energy ΔE ǂ = 5·8 ± 0·5 kcal/mole . This is interpreted by assigning the same activation energy to each term in the rate law. Values of k 3 , and ΔE ǂ are in good agreement with previous work[4,5]. |
