Neither of the U.K. opportunities came to fruition, but finally, the Brubecks convinced Columbia Records to underwrite the recording of a soundtrack album comprised of songs from the musical. With this in hand, they were confident they could finally land a producer to back the staging of the show. The recording sessions brought together four of the era’s most celebrated jazz headliners: Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars, three quarters of the Dave Brubeck Quartet (sax man Paul Desmond sat out the project), chanteuse Carmen McRae, and jazz vocalese pioneers, Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. The Brubecks used reel to reel audio letters to Armstrong to teach him his songs, and had rehearsals in their Oakland, CA home with McRae so she knew her songs cold. |
