Popis: A new general method was developed for the synthesis of tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides. The method involves the Diels-Alders reaction between maleic anhydride and bis-furan compounds and subsequent aromatization of the adducts formed. Using the dianhydrides obtained poly-(aroylene-bis-benzimidazoles) and polyimides were synthesized by single- and two-stage methods. The polymers are stable in air up to 500–550° and with lateral phenyl substituents are soluble in organic solvents. When the polymers are synthesized in polyphosphoric acid the stage of aromatization of adducts is excluded.
