Popis: | UNTIL very recently the diagnosis and treatment of chronic ulceration of the colon presented many difficulties. Frequently the etiology was in doubt or dispute, and, as a natural result, the diagnosis and treatment were not satisfactory. When a specific cause could be found, as in amebic or bacilliary dysentery, luetic or tuberculous infection, or malignant ulceration, the diagnosis and prognosis were simplified. But after every reasonable effort to discover a definite cause, there still remained a large group of cases in which the etiological factor was obscure. One would have expected that during the late war, when thousands contracted dysentery in the campaigns in Egypt and Gallipoli, and when careful and organized study was made, our knowledge of this condition would have been greatly increased. On the contrary, many cases, in which the specific ameba was found in the stools, and which were apparently cured, later developed a chronic ulcerative colitis and instead of the Ameba histolytica being found ... |
