Ship autopilot technology has progressed considerably since the sixties. However most existing autopilots are mainly heading control autopilots. The availability of new positioning systems such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the possibility to obtain precise position thanks to Differential GPS opens the way to a new generation of autopilots: track keeping autopilots which would enable the ship to follow precisely a predefined path. The Port of Bordeaux has undertaken with the help of the University of Bordeaux the development of an autonomous surface vehicle (NAUSICAA) to serve as a platform for hydrographic data acquisition. This paper describes the general architecture of NAUSICAA and focuses on the design of the control system. Results obtained in June 95 from actual trials on the Garonne River are presented. |
