Popis: Plant cell cultures have been proved in the past to be an efficient source for the isolation of novel enzymes. Therefore, cultivated plant cells are a valuable tool fur the investigation of the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Three examples in the alkaloid field are discussed: the enzymatic formation of the isoquinoline alkaloid berberine in the family Berberidaceae, the biosynthesis of the indole alkaloid ajmaline in Rauwolfia serpentina Benth. and the in vitro preparation of the dimeric alkaloids voafrine A and B.
