Popis: | Among the various mechanisms capable of producing extraterrestrial γ-rays, two (« collision » and « radioactivity ») are singled out for discussion. Based on existing measurements of primary γ-rays, an upper limit of 10 cm−2 s−1 (order of magnitude) can be placed on the omnidirectional flux, averaged over time and space, of intergalactic cosmic rays exceeding about 600 MeV. Current and future satellite γ-ray measurements can improve this estimate and may also yield some information on the energy spectrum of interstellar cosmic rays and on the density of diffuse matter in space. « Collision » and « radioactivity » γ-ray fluxes are estimated for a number of likely sources. |
