This paper reports Vertical Solar Louvers (VSL) which is a design for low cost solar heat storage where masonry columns with a rectangular cross section are spaced inside of south glazing at an angle of 45°to the south so that the wide face is oriented to the southwest. This invention is being used in a very low cost passive solar home in Ferrum, Virginia to provide an outstanding 82% solar heating fraction as well as in a Colorado home which is one of the National Passive Solar Home Award winners. Included are construction details, thermal performance, experience and evaluation, as well as projected applications. |
