Popis: In May 2018, Salford Archaeology was commissioned by White Young Green to undertake an archaeological evaluation prior to the development of the Laurus Didsbury High School in Didsbury, Manchester. The evaluation was particularly targeted at ascertaining the presence or absence of human remains from a former cemetery that was cleared during the 1970's and 1980's. The potential for archaeological remains was highlighted in an archaeological desk-based assessment that was prepared by CFA Archaeology Ltd during 2016. The archaeological evaluation consisted of three trenches. This trenching showed that the whole area within the former cemetery boundary wall had been cleared and backfilled during the 1970's and 80's clearance, and during the demolition of the former Withington Hospital in 2008. It proved impossible to safely reach natural deposits within the cleared area. A small amount of charnel, missed duration the clearances, was encountered within late 20th century backfill deposits. Natural sand and gravel was encountered beyond the boundary wall of the cemetery. The remains of a late 20th road, probably associated with the hospital, were observed but no features of archaeological significance were encountered.
