Popis: In an increasing number of fields of research it is important to be able to record very transient optical phenomena. Modern ultrafast cameras, called ‘streak’ cameras, are able to record — in the range from X-rays to infra-red — events which last only a few picoseconds (10 −12 s). This article reviews the principles and design of such cameras, with special reference to one optimized for X-ray detection.
