The object of this paper is to show the important part played by storage batteries in present-day electrical engineering practice. Many of the applications are surveyed in detail as regards design, purpose, latest improvements and practice, and actual results obtained in service. Contrary to general anticipation that the national grid would lead to a greatly reduced demand for storage batteries, the grid has given rise, directly and indirectly, to numerous new applications for batteries. Although the review deals entirely with lead-acid batteries, it is not intended to belittle the importance of other types or to ignore the fact that these types too may be of great practical value in many applications. |
