Once considered unacceptable, workplace romances (WRs) are becoming increasingly commonplace and accepted if managed appropriately. Despite news headlines depicting powerful executives losing their jobs over WR, many scholars and businesses are supportive of WR as long as potential conflicts of interest are managed for the greatest benefit and least harm to the relevant parties. Though many of the conflicts of interest that arise from WR are common to many professions and places of business, there are unique considerations when WR occurs in an academic dermatology department. This chapter will provide a modern context for WR, and then seek to delineate the ethical principles involved in WR. We conclude with a suggested framework for evaluating conflicts of interest in this type of circumstance and apply that framework to case scenarios involving residents, medical students, faculty, and office staff. |
