Popis: Turner (1982 b ) considered that the presence of Chaoborus in Lake Malawi and its absence from Lake Tanganyika implies that the clupeid fishes of the latter are more efficient zooplanktivores than the fishes in Lake Malawi. He suggested that in lakes which lack clupeids the introduction of these fish would increase fish catches. This may be erroneous on two grounds: 1. (a) He assumed that the basic rates of carbon fixation are comparable in both lakes, but the data are limited and it is possible that Lake Tanganyika is more productive as the mixed layer is shallower and upwelling involves monimolimnetic water as compared with metalimnetic water in Lake Malawi. 2. (b) The absence of Chaoborus from Lake Tanganyika may be the result of chemical factors rather than predation. The wisdom of introducing clupeids is questioned. In the light of factors which lead to relatively low investment in fisheries management it is suggested that the capital which would be required to effect an introduction would be more efficiently invested in such schemes as the ‘buying-in’ of fishing gear or the establishment of hatcheries for cyprinids.
